HUMAN RESOURCES & EMPLOYMENT LAW FOR FIRST NATIONS

WS#201

Effective human resource management (HRM) is a critical part of a First Nation community’s ability to work effectively to achieve its vision and goals. This workshop is designed to help integrate a clear understanding of employment law into your HRM to improve the management of your employees and workplace culture. Our lawyers will provide an overview of how the federal and provincial employment law framework applies to your Nation or Organization. The objective of this workshop is to work together to ensure human resource and employment laws are being applied effectively within your own internal policies and procedures.

FIRST NATIONS LEADERSHIP: A REFLECTION ON GOVERNANCE

WS#202

A clear understanding of the governance structure of your Nation and the roles and responsibilities within it facilitates a more effective decision-making process.  Whether you are a newly-elected Council or Board or a long-serving Leader of your Nation, engaging in group leadership training helps develop teamwork, re-acquaints you with existing laws and policies, and provides you with an opportunity to identify areas that require improvement or change. Our governance workshop provides guidance to foster effective and accountable decision-making, resulting in greater capacity for supported leadership. The goal of this workshop is to reflect on how to develop a relationship of trust and synergy between leadership and membership.

CUSTOM ELECTION CODES FOR FIRST NATION GOVERNMENTS & BOARDS

WS#203

Contemporary First Nation governments take many forms; from Indian Act Band Councils to Non-Profit Societies to Traditional and Hereditary Governments. Our workshop explores Indian Act election systems and customary election codes. We explore key concepts such as eligibility, term of office, voters’ lists, removal from office and appeals. The objective of this workshop is to provide you with options for the elections process, from opting-out of the Indian Act, or opting-in to the new First Nation Election Act, as well as guidance for updating your Custom Election Code to address deficiencies or chronic issues. You will be provided with evaluation tools, as well as best practices to ‘indigenize’ your existing laws or society bylaws and constitution.
